2013 WINTER CAR CARE TIPS

CAR CARE FOR 2013
  • Every TWELVE months or 12,000 miles, the brakes, spark plugs, coolant and steering and suspension should be checked to prolong the life of your vehicle.
  • Every THREE months or 3,000 miles, change the engine oil and filter, check the levels of other fluids including automatic transmission, power steering and brake, and check battery and cables, belts and hoses.
  • The exhaust and fuel filter should also be checked at the THREE month interval also.
  • Perform MONTHLY checks of tire pressure & the condition of tires, lights & windshield washer fluid.
  • The vehicle should also be cleaned MONTHLY.
  • Every SIX months or 6,000 miles, the chassis lubrication should be checked & windshield wipers should be replaced so that you can clearly see the road ahead and behind you.
If the "Check Engine" light comes on, vehicles should be IMMEDIATELY taken in for service to identify the problem. It may indicate a small issue or it could be a major problem. Don't risk it in 2013!

My engine cranks slower and slower, then clicks

The engine cranks  slower and slower, then clicks

If the engine cranks slower and slower until it just clicks, this means the starter motor doesn't have enough power to turn over the engine so it cannot start. This problem should be fairly easy to figure out, as there are just two cables (positive and negative) to deliver the electric current from your battery to the starter motor. A very weak battery is the most common problem in this case
A bad starter motor also can cause starting problems. In my case it just went completely dead. I had to get towed and waited for a new motor to arrive. Of course, a poor connection or corrosion at the battery terminals or bad battery cables can also cause these symptoms. If the battery is very old, you might want to start with replacing the battery; a new battery is not very expensive.

More Winter Car Care Tips

Winter Car Care is Important You and Your Car!
Where's some of the things you can do to prevent Problems along Winter Roads.
Winter in Manville, NJ Photo by Premiere Media.biz
Read your owner’s manual & follow manufacturer’s recommended service schedules.
Emergencies—The Winter Cold can be Unforgiving in case of an Accident or a total Vehicle shutdown, like a dead battery, so carry gloves, boots, blankets, flares, a small shovel, sand or kitty litter, tire chains, a flashlight, and a cell phone. Pack a few “high-energy” snacks.
Fuel—Put a bottle of fuel de-icer in your tank once a month to help keep moisture from freezing in the fuel line. Also try to keep the gas tank filled, it helps prevent moisture from forming.
Cooling System—The cooling system should be flushed and refilled as recommended. The level, condition, and concentration of the coolant should be checked periodically. (A 50/50 mix of anti-freeze and water is usually recommended.) Please be careful, never remove the radiator cap until the engine has thoroughly cooled! The tightness and condition of drive belts, clamps, and hoses should be checked by the Nerger's Auto Express pros.Battery—The only accurate way to detect a weak battery is with professional equipment. Routine care:  Scrape away corrosion from posts and cable connections; clean all surfaces; re-tighten all connections. If battery caps are removable, check fluid level monthly. Just be reallycareful:  Removal of cables can cause damage or loss of data/codes on some newer vehicles. Check your manual. Be sure to avoid contact with corrosive deposits and battery acid. Wear eye protection and rubber gloves.Oil—Change your oil and oil filter as specified in your manual—more often if your driving is mostly stop-and-go or consists of frequent short trips.  At Nerger's Auto Express we know that regular oil and filter changes is one of the most frequently neglected services, we see that way to often yet we all know that is essentialto the protectionof any engine.
Heater/Defroster—The heater and defroster must be in good working condition for passenger comfort and driver visibility. Windshield Wipers—Replace old blades. If your climate is really bad like, purchase rubber-clad (winter) blades to fight ice build-up. Stock up on windshield washer solvent—you’ll be surprised how much you use.
Carry an ice-scraper.
Lights—Inspect all lights and bulbs; replace burned out bulbs; periodically clean road grime from all lenses. To prevent scratching, never use a dry rag. A car must not only run great , it must also look great!
Tires—Worn tires will be of little use in winter weather. Examine tires for remaining tread life, uneven wearing, and cupping; check the sidewalls for cuts and nicks. Check tire pressure once a month. Let the tires “cool down” before checking the pressure. Rotate as recommended. Don’t forget your spare, and be sure the jack is in good condition.
Car Money Saving Tips: Under-inflated tires or poorly aligned wheels makes your engine work harder and thus use excess gasoline. Also have your brakes checked periodically for safety and to prevent costly repairs that can be caused by neglect.
Transmission—Often neglected until a major failure, routine checks and fluid changes at prescribed intervals can prevent very costly repairs down the line.
Stay Save and Enjoy the Road.

The Best Way to Care for a New Car

You Getting a New Car , Please Be a Little Patient and take your time during the break-in period
I 'm sure want to keep that new car feeling to last forever and You want to make that vehicle last as long as possible in top condition. Here are some things to remember as you pull it out of the dealer’s lot:
During the break-in period, typically the first 1,000 miles, keep your speed under 55 mph or to the speed recommended by your car’s manufacturer, it will pay you back in savings later,
Trust me, at Nerger's Auto Care we Know
Avoid heavy loads on the drive train, such as towing trailers, and loading the roof rack or trunk with heavy construction materials. Your Transmission will Thank You for it Later.
Do not allow your new car to idle for long periods — this is good advice for the life of your car, but especially during the first month. The oil pressure generated by doing so may not be sending oil to every part of your engine.
Oil is the life's blood of your car, it makes all movement possible
Use only light to medium acceleration, keeping the engine rpms below 3,000 for the first few hours of driving.
Enjoy that New Car, Truck or Van, and if you ever have any questions about any vehicle you operate.

How do I Keep My Car Running?

➢Make sure you go to a reputable AAA Service Center
with certified ASE technicians.

➢Have regular oil changes done using the proper,
recommended fluids. Just as important are the routine
maintenance flushes to protect and prevent corrosion
of major systems. (The key systems are the anti-freeze/
coolant, transmission, steering and fuel systems)

➢While cost control is important in all of our lives today,
it is not true that “the cheapest deal in town is the best
deal.” A job done right, with quality parts and certified
technicians, will always save you $$$ in the long run and
keep your vehicle a happy one.

➢It is important to include thorough inspections at
regular intervals to catch potential problems early on
before they grow into expensive repairs. This is also an
opportunity to stay on top of reliability and safety items–
your tires, wipers, belts, brakes and battery.

➢Ensure that repairs are complete and include all the
items and any related parts that should also be replaced.
A common issue we encounter is when a vehicle’s timing
belt has been replaced but not its corresponding parts.
The related parts then fail later on and the entire job must
be redone or even worse, the engine may be ruined.

➢Keep your vehicle washed regularly. Ideally this would
be once a week, with a bi-annual polish. Between the
strong sun and environmental contaminants, the finish
oxidizes, corrodes and rusts. Keeping the exterior clean
on a regular basis will prolong a car’s life, its appearance
and help to maintain its resale value.

ODD EVEN DAYS GAS NOW IN EFFECT in NJ AND NY NOW!

Standing in LIne for get Gas in New Jersey? Make sure to check your Last Plate Number!
ODD EVEN DAYS IN NY - NOW IN NEW YORK!!!
NJ ENDED 11/13/2012
This is a reminder regarding the gas restriction set forth by Gov. Christie. Cars whose license plate's last number is an odd number can get gas on odd days. Cars whose last number in the plate is an even number can get gas on even numbered days of the month. If your plate has no numbers, you can get gas on odd numbered days of the month. GAS Rationing can be helpful, proven in New Jersey so it moves to New York!
Some examples are:

Personalized Plates are consided ODD I would Think.

FYI: Cool Car Trick #1 From Nerger Auto Sales.

At Nerger's Auto Service and Sales in Bound Brook we Love our Cars. Better yet we Love Car Tricks, so here is the first one.  Yes You Can Try This at Home. Just don't let the kids find out about it.
A convenient feature that's been around for years, but remains unknown to many car owners, is the ability to lower the windows with the key remote. This allows you to begin cooling your car without having to get in first. Unless the car dealership told you about this trick or you happen to read manuals for fun, you may have been unaware of this ages-old trick.

The trick usually involves pressing the remote's unlock button, releasing it, then pressing it again and holding it down. In some cars, instead of using the remote, you can insert your key in the door lock and turn it clockwise, release, then turn it clockwise again and hold. Turning the key counterclockwise will usually raise the windows back up. Some cars will also include the sunroof as a window in this operation, while some convertibles with automatic tops will shut.

Based on an internal CNET poll, Reddit user comments and CNET user comments, we've confirmed that the trick works on various models from the following manufacturers: Thanks to Yahoo Auto.

They have really good cars.  They treat you like family and have really good service.
I love the people that work there and the best part about it is they are there after the sale to help you.

They’re good people to work with.  They understand how to help people when they’re down.  Sometimes I’m out of town driving a truck when the payment is due and we work out arrangements for payment over the phone.  I appreciate that they have special arrangements for repairs.  I have dealt with other buy here/pay here dealers and your company really stands out from others in the industry.
They sell good cars.  I love my Buick and will never get rid of it even when I’m six feet under.  Between me and my family I bought 5 cars here the last few years and I really like coming here.
